El Capitan Asbestos Removal, Lead Abatement, and Demolition Project

El Capitan High School is a public high school in Lakeside, California that serves students in grades nine through twelve in East San Diego County. Built and opened in 1959, El Capitan is the fifth of twelve high schools to be constructed in the Grossmont Union High School District. Several recent updates to the school have been made recently, including an $11 million event center that includes an event space, lobby and concession areas, band room, practice room, dance studio, and drama classroom, which was completed in December of 2019.

El Capitan High Modernization & Abatement Project

In 2019, the high school issued a request for proposal to modernize the 300 and 400 buildings, including asbestos removal, lead abatement, and demolition, as well as several access improvements. During this public bidding process, several companies put their best proposal forward in hopes to be awarded the project – similarly licensed and experienced companies typically participate in the bidding process, making it extremely competitive. By making it a competitive environment, agencies are able to keep costs low and garner the most qualified companies to do the work; typically, the most qualified company with the lowest bid price is awarded the project. After participating in this competitive bidding process, which saw the participation of dozens of local construction companies, Watkins Environmental was awarded the asbestos abatement and demolition portion of the El Capitan modernization project. We completed the project with the utmost care, following all necessary policies and procedures outlined by the state and local municipalities. As a leading provider in asbestos and lead abatement, Watkins was incredibly honored and excited to have been a part of this project.
