Recently, Watkins Environmental was contracted for a full
asbestos abatement, universal waste removal, and complete
building demolition of the historic J.C. Penney building at 101 East Main Street (the corner of Main St. and Magnolia) in El Cajon. Construction began on the historic 14,000 square foot building in early 1947, and was completed in October of 1947. Over the years, it was home to several different businesses; first with a Ford Garage and Ford Agency, then Marek Motors, until it was purchased by the J.C. Penney Company in 1947.
Asbestos Abatement & Complete Building Demolition
Watkins Environmental completed a full asbestos abatement and universal waste removal, removing and disposing of a number of hazardous waste materials (light tubes, electronics, polychlorinated biphenyls, etc). We then demoed the entire commercial structure, including concrete slabs and footings. As this was a high-profile historic structure, our team completed the project with the utmost care, following all necessary policies and procedures outlined by the state and local municipalities. As a leading provider in asbestos and
lead abatement, Watkins was incredibly honored and excited to have been a part of this project. Until recently, the building housed a Salvation Army Thrift Store. The goal of this project was to turn the aging historic complex into a dynamic, thriving commercial space. Because of its central downtown El Cajon location, the corner of Main Street and Magnolia is slowly being transformed into a vibrant city space for locals and visitors alike. As a leading provider in asbestos and lead abatement, Watkins was incredibly honored and excited to have been a part of this project.
