Chesterton Elementary School

Project Details

Chesterton Elementary School, part of the San Diego Unified School District, is undergoing a comprehensive Whole Site Modernization. The project includes the complete demolition of all existing permanent buildings and portable classrooms, followed by the construction of new facilities designed to support modern learning for more than 600 students.

Modernization and Site Improvements

The new campus will include an administration building, a multipurpose and food service building, three classroom buildings serving Universal Transitional Kindergarten through fifth grade, and a dedicated learning commons.

Additional site improvements include regrading and new utility installations, upgraded drainage and stormwater management, new parking and student drop-off areas, play equipment, and designated delivery and trash collection zones.

Environmental Abatement and Demolition

Watkins Environmental played a critical role in preparing the campus for construction by providing hazardous material abatement, selective demolition, and commercial demolition.

Our team safely removed asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paint from the existing structures. The selective demolition work involved the targeted removal of interior and exterior building components, while the full building demolition included the complete removal of all permanent structures and portable classrooms.

Through professional commercial asbestos removal and commercial lead removal, we helped create a safer work environment and delivered a clear, prepared site for the next phase of construction.
