Holmes Elementary School Abatement & Demolition Project

Project Details

Holmes Elementary School, part of the San Diego Unified School District, is undergoing a Whole Site Modernization that includes new construction, classroom renovations, campus upgrades, and development of a joint-use playfield designed to serve both students and the surrounding community.

New Classroom and Student Facilities

The modernization includes construction of a new upper-grade classroom building, a student services facility, a Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK) building, and two new kindergarten classrooms. These additions will expand instructional capacity and provide updated spaces for students and staff.

Classroom Modernization and Interior Upgrades

Existing upper-grade and kindergarten classrooms are being renovated with new finishes, paint, flooring, and whiteboards. Three additional classroom buildings will also be modernized, while the food services kitchen will be expanded and the current student services building converted into additional educational space.

Watkins Environmental supports school renovation projects with services such as interior demolition and selective demolition, helping prepare existing spaces for upgrades while preserving portions of the campus that remain in use.

Campus and Site Improvements

The project also includes a new parking lot with student drop-off and pick-up areas, along with improvements to campus security and hard court play areas.

Joint-Use Community Playfield

A new grass playfield is being developed with a walking and running track, trees, fencing, and drinking fountains. Built through the Play All Day partnership with the City of San Diego, the field will be available to the public after school hours and during school breaks.

Project Timeline

Construction began in April 2024 and is expected to be completed by late 2026. Once finished, the modernization will provide Holmes Elementary School with expanded learning spaces, updated facilities, and outdoor amenities that benefit both the school and the local community.
