NAWS China Lake Michelson Laboratory Complex (P-1904)
Project Details
Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) China Lake, a premier U.S. Navy research and testing installation, is developing the Michelson Laboratory Complex to expand its research, development, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E) capabilities. The project includes construction of a new chemical laboratory, an environmental testing center, and an advanced prototype machining facility, along with renovations to the existing Michelson Laboratory. The modernization is part of the Navy’s long-term investment in restoring and enhancing mission-critical facilities following the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquakes.
New Research & Testing Facilities
The project includes construction of state-of-the-art facilities that will support chemical research, environmental testing, and advanced prototype machining. These specialized laboratories are designed to improve operational efficiency while supporting the U.S. Navy’s ongoing weapons research, engineering, and technology development programs.
Laboratory Renovations
In addition to the new construction, the project includes repairs and modernization of Wings 6 and 7 within the existing Michelson Laboratory. These improvements help preserve critical research infrastructure while providing updated workspaces for scientists, engineers, and technical personnel supporting national defense initiatives.
Environmental Services & Site Preparation
Watkins Environmental supports complex federal construction projects with specialized services including selective demolition, interior demolition, and commercial demolition. These services help prepare occupied and mission-critical facilities for renovation and new construction while minimizing disruption to ongoing operations.
Supporting Mission-Critical Infrastructure
The Michelson Laboratory Complex represents a significant investment in modernizing one of the U.S. Navy’s premier research facilities. Once completed, the project will provide advanced laboratory space and upgraded infrastructure to support future innovation, testing, and mission readiness for decades to come.
