Rolando Park Elementary School Modernization Project

Project Details

Rolando Park Elementary School, part of the San Diego Unified School District, is undergoing a comprehensive campus modernization to expand early education opportunities, improve campus safety, and enhance both indoor and outdoor learning environments. The project also includes new joint-use recreational facilities designed to benefit students and the surrounding community.

New Construction and Campus Security

The modernization includes construction of a new two-classroom Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK) building to support early learning programs. A new administration addition at the front of the campus will establish a secure single point of entry, improving safety for students, staff, and visitors.

Classroom and Facility Improvements

Existing classrooms are being modernized to meet current educational standards and provide updated learning environments. The project also includes converting the existing warming kitchen into a fully operational commercial kitchen to better support daily food service operations.

Watkins Environmental supports school modernization projects with services including interior demolition and selective demolition, helping prepare existing facilities for renovation while preserving structures that remain in use.

Site and Community Improvements

Campus improvements include enhanced security features, improved wayfinding, new shade structures, outdoor gathering spaces, learning areas, and updated playground equipment designed to create a safer and more engaging environment for students.

In partnership with the City of San Diego, the project also includes new joint-use athletic fields featuring natural grass, walking and running tracks, picnic tables, benches, shade trees, and professionally landscaped open spaces. These recreational facilities are available to the public after school hours and during school breaks, strengthening the connection between the school and the local community.
